Y-3 Hybridizes Sports Designs For Its FW20 Sneakers
For FW20, Y-3 presents a fusion of disparate sporting designs, merging stadium and street aesthetics into a single collection that addresses the forward-thinking assertion of: “The Street is the New Stadium”.
adidas Originals' Senior Director Design Statement, Ebru Ercon told us "We looked at traditional sports like fencing, gymnastics and archery, but we wanted to clash them with things that have come up from the streets like running or basketball." The first drop of the collection includes garments fashioned from the worlds of archery and running. Archery lends its characteristically asymmetrical chest guards, while running inspiration adds reflective fabrics.
Below, Ercon walks us through 5 product highlights from the brand's FW20 showroom in Paris.
Y-3 FYW S-97 II
“This silhouette is inspired by basketball and fencing. It’s an evolution of the Y-3 FYW S-97 that we launched a couple of season ago. We have worked on a new upper on the Salvation Feet You Wear tooling, with Boost visible via two cutaways, and a black and cream-to-white colorway. We used this canvas throughout the range, it’s light but quite tough."
Y-3 Hokori II
“The Hokori looks at that whole era of fat skate shoes, with basketball references in the mix. A mix of premium materials come together to create a bold, low-top silhouette, emphasized with a thick outsole. After being available in woman-sizes only, this season we launch it in men's sizes too.”
Y-3 Notoma
“The Notoma outdoor boot is super sturdy, coated-canvas upper, it’s called cement detailing. Rugged outsole. That comes in black and in caulky, which we would never normally do a caulky color in Y-3 footwear so we’re really excited about that. It makes it look a bit more elevated.”
Y-3 Hicho
“Then we’ve got the Hicho, which is a platform Campus. That’s kind of our classic court shoe for the season, it rides on a thick platform, adding height and creating a subtle statement. It's crafted with a smooth leather upper.”
Y-3 Kaiwa
“And then we’ve got the Kaiwa, our most progressive silhouette since a couple of years, which shows some materializations here that we hadn’t done before. It’s a really lovely, caulky suede, then we’ve got the tough canvas again, which just makes it feel like a little bit more elevated.”
