With winter firmly holding all the cards at the moment, there's one thing you've gotta remember: spring is next and that means warmer, if slightly more random, changeable weather.

This volatility was firmly in the minds of American heritage label Woolrich and its design team as they began work on the new spring/summer outerwear collection for 2018. 'Versatility' was the watchword, as the brand's European team explains.

As such, this season's standout piece for guys can be reworked and worn three ways. Woolrich's iconic GTX Mountain Parka—first designed in the '70s and one of the first consumer jackets to use GORE-TEX—features a detachable padded lining filled with the 90/10 ratio of down-to-feather, and which can be worn separately as a puffer jacket.

While you're doing this, the Mountain Jacket's outer shell becomes a lighter jacket for late-spring to guard against gusts and rain as temperatures begin to rise. Wear them together and you're set for late winter and early spring in total. For SS18, Woolrich updated the silhouette in Paclite fabric, with a hood, chest welt pocket and heat-sealed finished for 100% waterproofing.

Other key pieces include the light Pacific Jacket in a striking yellow colorway with an adjustable hood, breathable fabric, and pockets sealed by waterproof zips, while the soft shell Plum Run Track Jacket uses light padding in Thermore Ecodown.

For women, the 3-in-1 GTX Mountain Parka appears in a refined cut, while the shorter cut Military Eskimo has similar multi-functional vibes, too. The detachable inner bomber jacket means it can be worn as a padded short parka, a down jacket with fur-lined hood, or a light short parka.

Meanwhile, the Military Vest and Rain Parka serve as lighter alternatives as April and May get into their stride.
