After months of anticipation, fans have finally gotten a look at Matt Reeves' The Batman and Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight

The teaser comes as a bit of a surprise, as production on the movie was shut down in its very early stages due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet the footage Reeves brought to DC’s FanDome virtual convention is a pretty good glimpse at what fans of the caped crusader should expect.

During the panel, Reeves revealed the film will be a gritty detective thriller that draws inspiration from classic films such as Chinatown and Taxi Driver. At the end of the panel, Reeves shared the first trailer for The Batman, but reminded audiences this was just a small taste of what's to come, as the film is only 25 percent completed.

"As we said, it's not an origin tale and you're meeting him in the early days ... a lot of the other stories are very much about how he had to master his fear and master himself," Reeves said. "I think for me, what was exciting, is not doing that, not doing the origin, but instead, to meet him in the middle of this criminological experiment, to see him fail and grow and be heroic but in a way that felt very human, very flawed ... the audience of putting the audience in the shoes."

In the trailer, a nefarious force in Gotham City is trying to get to Batman. The trailer also introduces a few key characters, including Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon and Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman. Meanwhile, Reeves stressed that many of these characters are still coming into themselves; Selina Kyle is not Catwoman yet, for example, and both The Riddler and The Penguin are also early into their own criminal careers.

Arguably the most surprising reveal in the trailer is the depiction of Bruce Wayne. In this iteration, Wayne isn't the well-kept, put together playboy the likes of Christian Bale have portrayed him as, instead Pattinson's Wayne is much more unkempt and goth.

The film was originally supposed to be released on June 21, 2021, however, now it's been pushed back to a tentative October 1, 2021, release date.
