Since its founding in 2005, Reddit has become one of the internet’s predominant resources for the best of everything across the web – in fact, it’s referred to far and wide as “the front page of the internet,” and the title is fitting. And, when it comes to the area of self-improvement, Reddit comes to the rescue once again.

During any given month, nearly 550 million unique visitors browse one of Reddit’s million subreddits, which run the gamut from mild and normal like /r/news and /r/fitness to wild like /r/oldschoolcool and /r/earthporn, to downright fucking weird like /r/catsstandingup or /r/slavs_squatting – in short, Reddit’s depth and breadth is mind-bending.

For those on a more specific journey of self-improvement on Reddit, reference sources abound, with literally thousands of subreddits dedicated to every aspect of betterment, including personal finance, education and physical health.

I could probably write a book trying to list them all, but who the hell has time for that? So that you can cut to the chase, we've rounded up the 10 best subreddits for self-improvement:

/r/selfimprovement/

I’d be remiss not to begin the round up with Reddit’s dedicated self-improvement subreddit, /r/selfimprovement/.

I won’t lie, this sub can be a little whiny. Mainly, it’s a bunch of people asking questions about getting better and improving themselves in some way or another. Finding purpose after the death of a significant other, how to stop pushing people away, getting better at socializing, and so on.

It can be tough to read at times, but there’s a lot of excellent information for people of all ages, genders, professions and general backgrounds, and the best part is that self-promotion and spamming is highly frowned upon because the sub is so dedicated to being a valuable resource for people looking to just be better.

If you want something a little less bummer-ish at times, check out /r/decidingtobebetter or /r/getmotivated — both are excellent.

/r/zenhabits/

By definition, Zen is a term that focuses on finding complete focus, relaxation and contentment in one’s present. /r/zenhabits is a self-improvement sub that focuses on concepts like meditation, productivity, happiness and other aspects of self-improvement.

You’ll find incredible stories, articles, documentaries and anecdotal posts centered around making people more “Zen” in both their professional and personal lives. It’s well worth a look.

/r/personalfinance/

Whether you’re a fresh-out-of-college future business maven seeking advice on the best ways to invest your first paycheck, or you’re someone with awful credit looking for a quick bump up the FICO totem pole, /r/personalfinance/ is an absolute gold mine for information on... well, personal finance.

The sub goes through everything from automobile financing to personal investing, financial planning, budgeting, credit card information and seriously everything in between. It even sorts threads according to age range and topic of interest.

If you’re looking to get your money right, start here.

/r/howtonotgiveafuck/

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. /r/howtonotgiveafuck is a self-improvement subreddit dedicated to the subtle art of simply give less of a fuck about anything, with positive results.

It sounds selfish, but the idea here is that people are their best when they’re allowed to be themselves. The posts here are incredibly helpful and applicable to our every day lives, and current posts include gems like: “How To Have An Interesting Conversation With Anyone, When You Can’t Think Of Anything To Say,” “Obsessed With a Girl—HTNGAF?” and more.

In other words, the goal of this subreddit is to help people come to a place where they push themselves to do better because they stop fearing what might happen if things go wrong.

/r/productivity/

Most of us could use some help with time management and productivity. Hell, even if you've got it together and aren’t having productivity issues, there are probably some tips and tricks you can take away from this sub.

From front to back, top to bottom, /r/productivity/ is literally all about getting you to make the most of what you've got and making sure you get as much as possible done.

Whether it’s trying to optimize and prioritize the amount of browser tabs you have open at once, dealing with cut hours from your employer or organizing (and executing!) a daily to-do list, this sub has everything.

/r/frugal/

It’s funny to me how, to some people, being frugal is a part of everyday life, but to others, it’s almost a four-letter word. People also tend to believe that frugality is a term used only in reference to money.

In reality, frugality is a concept surrounding the allocation of resources, including money, of course, but also time, convenience, space, talent and many other factors. Learning how and when to be frugal and what resources to be frugal with is a learning process that’s difficult not just for the younger crowd, but people of all ages. I’m still learning how not to act like Mr. Moneybags McDoctorbigdick at the club every Friday, but c’est la vie.

The nicest thing about this sub is that you’ll see threads for things you never even considered, like how to cut moving expenses when it’s time to switch pads, how many staplers is too many staplers, or the best wild meats to cook with on a budget. I didn’t think I’d ever need to know this, but hey, now I do (spoiler: it’s venison).

/r/malefashionadvice/ or /r/femalefashionadvice/

Imagine having a style consultant in your pocket at all times of the day — for free. Well, that’s exactly what /r/malefashionadvice/ and /r/femalefashionadvice/ are all about, and then some.

Not only will you get the basics on outfit advice and suggestions, how clothing should fit and building outfits that work, but you’ll also get some really incredible information from people in the know. Right now, there’s a thread on how to cop some inexpensive Patagonia stuff, one on wide boot sizing and one with an update on the Nike Killshot 2 being back up on the J. Crew main site.

You’ll find the same kind of tips, tricks and advice in/r/femalefashionadvice/ , along with general discussion and some interesting fashion-related opinion threads. If you’re looking to put your ear to the ground somewhere useful, these two subs are kiiiiiiller.

/r/explainlikeimfive/

This is another great one for people who just want to learn more about the wide array of crap in the world around us. It’s literally a subreddit dedicated to explaining an array of interesting and difficult (and completely random) concepts in ways that even children could understand.

Want to know why knots in muscles occur and how to get rid of them? Or how about what causes all those high-pitched wining noise in all those rally car videos you’ve been watching on YouTube? How does the central auditory system interpret sound, from a biochemical perspective? How about why humans get diarrhea when we’re nervous?

Those questions and more are all answered by Redditors who are mostly experts in their particular field.

/r/quoteporn/

Listen y’all… I love a Kung Fu Kenny lyric quote as much as the next guy, but you've always gotta be on some next level shit if you want to survive in this world, and /r/quoteporn/ will expand your pool of people to quote in no time.

There are lots of brilliant people out there who’ve said a lot of deep, motivational and inspirational shit, like Voltaire, who said, “It is clear that the individual who persecutes a man, his brother, because he is not of the same opinion, is a monster,” or Osho, who said, “Creativity is the greatest rebellion in existence.”

Both quotes I took directly from the sub. Get your ass on over there and subscribe.

/r/loseit/

There are literally hundreds of subreddits that’ll help you get into better shape. /r/fitness is a great one, as are ones like /r/nutrition, /r/bodybuilding, /r/running and many, many others. I’m putting /r/loseit here because it truly is one of the most positive subreddits on all of Reddit.

Aside from the community being so wonderfully positive and supportive, there’s a lot going on for everyone: people posting updates and tips, nutrition and work out advice, where to donate the clothes that undoubtedly won’t fit you anymore, how to stop certain cravings and awesome recipes.

If you’re already in shape and you feel /r/loseit might not be enough for you, /r/fitness and the others I mentioned above are great. But for those just getting into it again (or even for the first time), /r/loseit is awesome.
