Warning: there are spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home below.

Spider-Man: Far From Home opened in North America today and along with rave reviews, we've learned that the two shocking, post-credit scenes could have huge implications for the fourth phase of the MCU. Below we've detailed what went down in each of the scenes and what it means for the forthcoming cinematic universe — so if you're avoiding spoilers, scroll no further.

Post-Credit Scene 1:

The first sees Peter Parker and MJ returned to New York, having returned from Europe after deftly taking out Mysterio. We then see a news report featuring footage Mysterio recorded before his death which implicates Spiderman alongside a deepfake video of Peter Parker calling for the execution of innocent civilians. J. Jonah Jameson (the former Daily Bugle editor, once again played by J.K. Simmons) is seen onscreen exclaiming that Spider-Man was responsible for the London attacks and the “hero” Mysterio’s death, before revealing Spiderman's identity.

Unlike the J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, this media personality is more aligned with a kind of Info Wars/ Alex Jones style personality. Thus, the Daily Bugle's claim that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and that Spider-Man is evil, may not resonate with mainstream audiences.

Many audience members are already speculating that Parker being outed could galvanize a league of villains, including Vulture and Scorpion, or even the formation of the Sinister Six–spurred on by Jameson's inflammatory rhetotic.

Post-Credit Scene 2:

Like the Infinity War post-credit scene, the second opens with Nick Fury and Maria Hill, however here they are revealed to have actually been Talos and Soren, the Skrulls from Captain Marvel. The real Nick Fury is in fact on a simulated vacation on a Skull spaceship. This explains some of his questionable decision making during the film. We don't know exactly how long Fury has been impersonated by a Skrull, and it raises questions about several of his cameos in the second and third phases.

The fact that shape-shifting Skrulls exist on earth has obvious and significant implications for the Avengers, and the fourth phase of the MCU in general.

Post-credits scenes are a Marvel tradition, and until now, the only movie to buck the trend was Avengers: Endgame, despite the fact that it was not the final movie in Phase Three. Recently, however, Endgame returned to theaters with a new post-credit scene.
