Fictional Pete Davidson Might Dress Better Than IRL Pete Davidson
On the set of Bupkis, Pete Davidson's forthcoming Peacock comedy about his own fictionalized life, the former SNL star is displaying a panache for style that far outstrips his typical day-to-day outfits. Maybe it's the costume department or maybe Davidson's just got good on-screen taste, because fictional Davidson is currently out-dressing his IRL counterpart.
For clarity, the plot of Bupkis appears to be a slightly fictionalized version of Davidson's life growing up on Staten Island. Think Curb Your Enthusiasm on the East Coast and you'll be mostly there.
So, the Pete Davidson we're seeing in the first-look photos is essentially the prototype of the Pete Davidson we see now or at least his character is.
The interesting angle for this situation is that it allows for us to compare and contrast Davidson's personal style over the years, kinda.
Typically, even when he's on the set, Davidson looks fairly schlubby, which is part of his charm, I think.
Even over the course of a year, though, Davidson has practically transformed his wardrobe without losing that lovable slacker edge.
Compare the frumpy cropped pants that Davidson wore in December 2021 to the H&M sweats and Dickies workwear he wears to big events nowadays: no extra effort here, just better-fitting gear, sharper sunglasses, and sporty sneakers.
We know Pete Davidson has a streetwear side, though he doesn't really lean into any hyped brands most of the time.
So, it's a pleasant surprise to see him on the Bupkis set wearing a daringly weird faux leather jacket and well-coordinated Stone Island flight pants (yours for $635) with some classic Converse.
It may just be that Davidson had to wear something a little more put-together for this scene, since the outfit he wore to the prior shoot in Brooklyn wasn't exactly snappy but even that tracksuit is a big upgrade from his H&M clothes, even if he's being paid to wear the latter (the JJJJound ASICS were an especially nice touch and highlight Davidson's quietly stylish intent).
So I can't award points to Davidson for his comfy-cool Stoney outfit without knowing whether or not it was a look of his own doing but it's definitely the right direction for the actor to head in.
It's too bad, because I'd be awarding bonus points for removing that coveted Stone Island badge on the left leg. Not that I think it looks bad, mind you, but because it's one of those things you ostensibly could do to minimize the branding (Ã la snipping the Margiela tag stitches) but so few folks actually do.
But, then again, did Davidson do that because he's a Subtle Fashion Enjoyer or because the legal team said the visible Stone Island branding could create problems? Do we award style points to fictional Davidson or IRL Davidson?
I like to imagine it's the former, if only because it adds fuel to the argument that Pete Davidson, anti-fashion king that he is, actually cares about clothes.
