Netflix has issued a statement responding to the backlash against adverts potentially being added to the platform, CNN reports.

After users of the streaming service threatened to quit over the addition of ads — and let's be real, not being forced to watch commercial breaks is one of the best things about Netflix — the company stepped in to clarify that it's only testing ads for shows on the platform and that the ads can be skipped.

"We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster," the statement said. "It is important to note that a member is able to skip a video preview at any time if they are not interested."

In other words, these aren't so much ads as they are personalized recommendations for what to watch next, an update of the company's current method of recommending content. Netflix added that hundreds of tests are conducted each year, with very few changes being fully integrated into the platform.
