Who: Harry Styles

The outfit he’s wearing: Everything is Gucci.

Location: Met Gala 2019

Why it works: "Camp" was the evening's theme and Harry Styles distilled it in his own, masterful way.

There's an ineffable brilliance about Styles in Gucci, particularly when he experiments with a more feminine look such as this. With his tattooed torso visible through a sheer shirt complemented by just the right amount of ruffles, Styles' aesthetic isn't a million miles away from the heyday of ’80s power silhouettes and the New Romantic movement.

Editor’s Notes: Last night, Harry Styles turned up to his very first Met Gala, for which he was the co-chair, wearing a lavish all-Gucci look. Styles, who was accompanied on the red carpet by the Italian house's creative director Alessandro Michele, embraced the evening's "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme by wearing a showstopping lacy black blouse. Twitter, unsurprisingly, was in thrall.

What made Styles' outfit so special were the details that went into it. Prior to landing the big job at Gucci, Michele served as the label's head accessories designer, and his fingerprints were all over the singer's look.

There was the pearl earring that lent a touch of ’80s glam (Styles only got his ears pierced a few days ago after his stylist Harry Lambert discovered the earring on the Gucci website); the slicked-back rock and roll hair and black and mint green nail polish; and the rings — the rings! Wearing excessive jewelry is always a big risk, but Lambert understands that you can have a bit more fun in this department when you're operating against a neutral, all-black color scheme.

“I think everyone was expecting Harry to be in sequins, bright colors, and a crown, but we decided on a different type of 'camp' that hopefully would surprise,” Lambert told Vogue. Styles' stylist went on to explain how Michele had sent over "around 20 designs” before the singer settled on the final look: “Harry and myself went through all the fabrics, sketches, and ideas, and shared our favorites. From there, Gucci produced samples of these and fittings commenced."

As we touched on earlier today, menswear has been boring for too long, so it's refreshing to see a star like Styles, someone kids look up to, be unafraid to show a bit of daring. This year’s Met Gala was full of great looks — Ashton Sanders in Telfar, Dev Hynes’ pastel-colored suit — but Styles got the note on "camp" and made it his own. And for that, we doff our cap.
