Thailand Legalizes Medical Marijuana in a "New Year's Gift" to the People
Thailand, which boasts one of the world's strictest drug laws, has approved medical marijuana for use across the whole country, Reuters reports.
“This is a New Year’s gift from the National Legislative Assembly to the government and the Thai people,” the drafting committee chairman, Somchai Sawangkarn announced in a controversial public statement.
The change is the first "baby step" to shifting rather archaic laws concerning weed in Southeast Asia, which currently sees the death penalty attached to trafficking in some neighboring countries.
There are concerns surrounding the law-shift, however, with some worrying that outside investors will take advantage of the legalized market, making it tougher for Thai people to access medicine as a side-affect.
