At first glance, the terms ‘luxury fashion’ and ‘football shirt’ seem distant at best, but the world of football jerseys is slowly becoming another concrete sign of fashion’s extending influence. What used to be functional jerseys, holding staggering significance for the people that wore them, have become a playground for sponsors and, recently, high-fashion and streetwear reboots. The latest in a line of style-centric jerseys comes from Marcelo Burlon and Napoli, but this partnership might be the evidence that ‘luxury fashion’ and ‘football shirt’ actually aren’t so distant after all.

Marcelo Burlon’s archive and experience are more varied than most. From DJing to photography, Burlon has many creative faces, and football-kit design is the most recent accolade to be etched onto his resumé. Combine his non-discriminatory approach to design with a fervent love of Italy — his brand’s extended name is Marcelo Burlon County of Milan — and the fact that Kappa and Napoli enlisted his luxury skillset to design Napoli’s new kit doesn’t seem so farfetched.

The partnership has proffered a full collection including a tracksuit, baseball cap, and even a football. The real stars of the show, though, are the home and away kits. Burlon’s signature feathered wings characterize the design, stretching from shoulder to shoulder in contrasting blue against a black and yellow backdrop for home and away respectively. Napoli’s circular logo punctuates the chest, mirrored by the Kappa Omini logo overlaying Burlon’s Cross motif.

Available as both a technical player’s version and a relaxed-fit version, Marcelo Burlon x Napoli furthers the case for football jerseys as everyday streetwear staples. The wing-emblazoned design carries as much punch on the pitch as it does in the city. The full Marcelo Burlon x Napoli x Kappa collection drops on April 16th.
