‘Joker’ Is Officially the Most Profitable Comic Book Movie Ever
Joker continues to beat expectations. The movie just ended its theatrical run breaking another record, by becoming the most profitable comic book movie ever.
Joker was produced with a $62.5 million budget and pulled an amount close to $955 million in theatres; topping Jim Carrey’s The Mask, which grossed $351 million on a $23 million budget. According to Forbes, if you consider budget versus global grosses, Joker is more profitable than any major comic book movie.
Joker's impressive performance at the box office surpasses that of It ($700 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million). It now places as the second-biggest September/October release of all time behind Venom ($854 million).
Todd Phillips' film has even outdone Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw ($758 million globally) to become the year’s biggest non-Disney/Marvel release.
The R-rated film has pulled these record number despite not getting a Chinese release but even without it, Joker has well and truly outperformed its projected performance. “It’s already in territory that nobody thought it would get to. It’s achieved a box office that is above the wildest expectations of the studio and analysts,” Comscore’s senior media analyst, told the Associated Press. “Even if the box office stopped right now it’s an absolute, unqualified success.”
