[UPDATE] July 19, 2018 1:16 p.m. EST Warner Bros. has announced a release date of October 4, 2019 for its standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Read our original story below.

Joaquin Phoenix will play the Joker in an upcoming solo movie for the supervillain, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. After weeks of speculation, Phoenix recently finalized the deal with Warner Bros. and filming is set to start in September.

The movie is said to revolve around Batman's arch-nemesis' origin story, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” The script has been co-penned by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips, who will also direct.

While there is no release date as yet, we do know that the project has a budget of around $55 million and is said to be "darker and more experimental in tone and content" than other comic book superhero flicks.
