Top Tier Layers: Rounding Up the Best Rainy Season Outerwear
Experience this story and others in the new issue of Highsnobiety Magazine, available from retailers around the world and our online store.
Wind, snow, rain, sleet… whenever the weather hits its most unbearable state, the garments we reach for are outerwear. It could be a slightly downcast summer day or a full-on snowstorm, and we still expect our outer layers to be a saving grace against the elements.
This is why picking out the right piece of outerwear is by no means an easy feat. It’s the type of garment that’s worth being intentional about — there’s a wide spectrum of looks to consider, from the classic long-length mac to the gorp-y windbreaker.
We selected some of our favorites from recent fashion collections to (hopefully) make choosing the right piece of outerwear a bit easier.
Highsnobiety
From cowboys to fighter pilots to bondage-wearing techno ravers, the leather jacket has proven that it is the ultimate versatile staple. Arriving with a folded collar, boxy fit, and two external pockets, this one has a pretty classic look — until you get to the color.
MCM
Possibly the hardest-working jacket of them all, a good windbreaker will be something you reach for all year long — from festival season to the festive season and back again. This design from MCM includes small details, such as a high neck and an adjustable hood, which provide that little bit of added protection.
Moncler
Moncler and down-filled puff just go hand in hand. Whether it’s the signature big shiny puffer jacket or something more lightweight like this, you know you’re getting a high-quality piece of outerwear. And this one comes with extra hits of branding for good measure.
Tommy Hilfiger
Living somewhere in the area between a trench coat, a fireman jacket, and a PVC rave lewk, Tommy Hilfiger has taken your classic beige-colored long coat and had some fun with it. This is a long way from the standard overcoat you’ll find slung on top of a suit in the corporate world.
Louis Vuitton (in Cover Image - currently unavailable)
Why have a toolbox when you can have a Louis Vuitton jacket with all the tools you would ever need hanging from it? Whether it’s scissors, pliers, or a paintbrush, they’re all here providing a long gray coat with some ornamentation.
