It's September. Days are getting shorter, leaves are falling from the trees, and temperatures are gradually dropping. It's time to face reality: summer will soon be a distant memory.

Lots of people claim to live for the shorts, slides, and shades game in summer, but just as many have been eagerly awaiting the time they can debut their fall wardrobe. In fact, the "I can't wait till it gets colder so I can really start dressing" sentiment is real and has even sparked a flurry of memes and reactions across the interweb.

And while it's all fun and games posting memes about wanting to add the extra layers to your ’fits, have you got the essential layering pieces to live up to your online humor? For colder days to come, it's worth having some essential fall layering pieces in your wardrobe before the chill hits, which is why we've selected all the best ones to have ready — from the uber comfortable hoodie to the must-have overshirt.

Scroll down to discover every key layering piece, and get Balenciaga-level prepped for fall.

The Hoodie

Once the uniform of angry teenagers, the hoodie has now become a staple in every closet. A good hoodie, be it plain or graphic-heavy, is a perfect layering piece for a fall day, especially when paired with a leather jacket or long coat.

And while we recently brought you top retailers' picks of the best FW18 hoodies, we at Highsnobiety have also had our eye on some select styles. "A hoodie is one of the most important pieces in anyone's Fall/Winter wardrobe," says HS curator Rhianna Matthews. "There's nothing better than throwing on a warm hoodie to keep you both cozy and steezy. They pretty much go with any street outfit, as they can be worn with more laid-back sweats and jeans, but can also be dressed up with a nice jacket over the top and some cords."

What's more, while streetwear brands have been releasing hoodies for years, more recently, luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci have caught on to the piece, now regularly including them in their Fall/Winter collections.

The Vest

Sleeveless, padded, and originally intended for countryside outings and sports activities, the vest may be the most quintessential layering piece of all. Not only will it keep you warm and comfy all day, it's also a super easy piece to pack away for sudden spurts of sunshine.

"Vests have been trending for a minute now," says Rhianna. "What better way to layer up and stay steezy? They can be worn over a T-shirt or sweater, and can also go underneath your jacket. Experimenting with styles and color is always a good idea, and — for me — the more tactical the better. Hidden gems can be found in your local thrift or vintage store, or even your local military store!"

The Denim Jacket

Is there anything denim can't do? Versatile and durable, a denim jacket works perfectly as a layering piece, as it's lightweight and can easily be worn under another jacket for extra warmth.

Whether it's distressed, dyed, or filled with patches, the right denim jacket is the ultimate piece to keep you looking effortlessly cool. Wear a T-shirt or hoodie underneath for ultimate laid-back vibes, or for a more nine-to-five look, consider wearing it over your usual work shirt. We won't judge you if you end up wearing it all the time.

"Investing in a nice, classic denim jacket is something you won't regret," says Rhianna. "There are lots of different looks to choose from —  the tight, cowboy-type, the oversized fit, or even the ripped and distressed. Oversized gets my vote every day."

The Overshirt

A lightweight jacket/shirt hybrid, the overshirt can easily be worn as either. Originally used in the makings of military uniforms, the overshirt is the perfect layering piece for those awkward in-between seasons and chilly fall days that don't require full-on insulation. Whether it's made from heavy cotton, wool, or flannel, the right overshirt will not only keep you cozy but will transcend seasonal fashion (coming in handy for spring, too).

"Overshirts are also a dope look to go for this fall, as you can still flex your new tees without the shivers," says Rhianna. "I would go with either a subtle tee or light sweater underneath, highlighting the shirt as a key piece. For extra coziness, cop a quilted tee to keep the heat in and get an extra structured look."
