Just three years after release, the $10,000-$17,000 gold Apple Watch Edition is now obsolete.

During Apple's WWDC, the tech company announced watchOS 5, a new OS for the Apple Watch that adds a walkie-talkie feature, activity sharing, and Apple Podcasts to the app. Unfortunately for first-generation Apple Watch owners, however, the new update won't work on the original version of the watch, meaning users won't be able to access any new features.

So if you're one of those early adopters who shelled out up to $17,000 for a gold Apple Watch Edition, it's time to upgrade — sorry.

For iPhone users, older models becoming obsolete when new tech upgrades are announced is nothing new (the tech company is currently in the middle of a class-action lawsuit in France regarding that very issue). However, considering that the Apple Watch Edition was priced in a similar bracket to other luxury watches — items that are marketed as lasting for generations — many consumers assumed their Apple Watch Edition would last longer than a few years.
