Behind the Logo is our original recurring series exploring the history, design, and evolution of the biggest trademarks in the industry. This episode delves into Nike and Jordan Brand's timeless representation of His Airness himself: the Jumpman.

Jordan Brand's Jumpman logo — created from a silhouette of Michael Jordan leaping for a dunk — is one of the most recognizable in sports. Since the first Jordan sneaker was released in 1985, anecdotes about the brand and Jordan himself have continued to entertain fans. But many might not know that in the photo that inspired the Jumpman, His Airness was actually wearing New Balance basketball sneakers, as he wasn't under contract with any brands at the time.
